Bone Density

A Bone Densitometry, also known as DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) or BMD (Bone Mineral Density) scan, is a specialised X-ray that measures bone mass and predicts fracture risk. It is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis.

Applications of Bone Density Scan

Bone Density Scans are crucial for:

  • Postmenopausal women and men over 50 are at risk for osteoporosis.
  • Patients with a personal or familial history of hip fractures or smoking.
  • Those on long-term steroid therapy, or with certain conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

The Procedure: What to Expect

During a DEXA scan:

  • You will lie on a padded table while a scanner passes over your body.
  • The scan usually focuses on the hip and lower spine to assess bone loss.
  • It’s a quick (15-20 minutes) and painless procedure, requiring you to stay still to ensure accuracy.

Post-scan, a Radiologist will analyse the results and provide a comprehensive report to your physician, helping to guide any necessary treatment plans.

Early Detection of Osteoporosis

Bone density scans can detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs, enabling proactive management of bone health.

Precision in Diagnosis

The dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) offers precise measurement of bone density, improving the accuracy of diagnoses.

Monitoring Bone Health

Regular DEXA scans help monitor bone density changes over time, assessing the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments.

Fracture Risk Assessment

By measuring bone density, DEXA scans provide a crucial assessment of fracture risk, particularly in older adults.
